Project Earth H2o and Team Pinkie Promise are Making Strides together for Breast Cancer Awareness

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month.! A month dedicated to driving awareness, remembering and honoring our loved ones, while working tirelessly to raise the funds to continue the scientific research needed to prevent and cure this deadly disease forever. If you have never been to a breast cancer event or walk you are really missing out. It truly is amazing to see how many individuals and families are getting involved. It is such a worthy cause and so many are compelled by many different reasons to get involved. When we decided to launch our Get Pink™ Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign by donating $2.00 of every bottle sold to breast cancer research we were compelled by many reasons. However, the simple underlying truth is that Project Earth H2o is a company of action – our customers are people of action - and neither of us are comfortable sitting on the sidelines.

Stephanie Belvin Hopson is one of those "people of action." Stephanie is the team leader for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides against Breast Cancer Awareness – “Team Pinkie Promise” out of Virginia. We were first introduced to Stephanie’s passion for finding a cure on FaceBook where we found her posting articles, facts, and statistics in effort to drive awareness while at the same time working hard to motivate others to get involved. It was obvious that her passion was genuine and she was clearly reaching others with her message. We decided to reach out and ask Stephanie why this cause is so important to her, “It’s really hard for me to nail down one specific reason,” says Stephanie, “but I have just been deeply moved by so many stories of women, mothers, sisters, and daughters who are fighting breast cancer and who have lost loved ones of all ages. They have inspired me to take this action, and fortunately, I am just one of many.”

We were amazed that with her level of dedication Stephanie had herself not lost a family member to breast cancer and we decided to help sponsor “Team Pinkies Promise’s” October walk. “What I love about PEH2o, says Stephanie, is that they are much more than just a company…they are so passionate and dedicated to improving environmental, health, and social issues that it’s more like a great club – I feel that my voice carries more weight.” This is something that PEH2o Founder, Brian Denton can relate to, “PEH2o was founded on the principals of creating a collective of savvy and proactive people who want to make a positive difference.

One very big reason to stop using plastic, it also happens to be twice the size of the continental United States.

Initially, we posted this article on our Twitter and Facebook page. However, due to an overwhelming response from outraged and some disbelieving readers, we are compelled to once again draw attention to what is by far one of the single-most, highly unknown environmental atrocities on our planet.

If you were to take a boat trip just 500 nautical miles off the beautiful shores of California you will eventually stumble upon what can only be described as a “plastic garbage soup” floating and swirling in the currents of the Pacific Ocean. Scientists have said that this “soup” is twice the size of the continental United States and is growing at an alarming rate. In fact, it is expected to double in size within the next 10 years if consumers don’t do something to curb their plastic use. This floating garbage soup stretches across the Northern Pacific, past Hawaii and almost as far as Japan. Scientists estimate that over 90% of this floating garbage soup is plastic.

“According to the UN Environment Program, plastic debris causes the deaths of more than a million seabirds every year, as well as more than 100,000 marine mammals. Syringes, cigarette lighters and toothbrushes have been found inside the stomachs of dead seabirds, which mistake them for food.”¹

A study of 560 fulmars from eight countries revealed they had ingested an average of 44 plastic items. The stomach of one fulmar that died in Belgium contained 1,603 separate scraps of plastic. However, Birds are not the only ones to suffer. Turtles, whales, seals and sea lions have all eaten plastic. But the most sinister problem may be a hidden one at the other end of the food chain.

Plastic is believed to constitute 90% of all garbage floating in the oceans. The UN Environment Program estimated in 2006 that every square mile of ocean contains 46,000pieces of floating plastic.

“Dr Eriksen, of the UN Environment Program, said the slowly rotating mass of garbage-laden water poses a risk to human health, too. Hundreds of millions of tiny plastic pellets, or nurdles – the raw materials for the plastic industry – are lost or spilled every year, working their way into the sea. These pollutants act as chemical sponges attracting man-made chemicals such as hydrocarbons and the pesticide DDT. They then enter the food chain. "What goes into the ocean goes into these animals and onto your dinner plate. It's that simple." ¹

“The only way to deal with the growing threat plastic poses to wildlife and the environment is to curb our consumption and to no longer treat plastic as an innocuous disposable commodity. Indeed, there is now a case for it to be treated as a potentially toxic waste product with the stiffest sanctions for its desultory disposal,” says Steve Connor.²

Awareness is the beginning to solving any problem. At first I was astonished at the number of people who were simply unaware of this extremely large problems existence. But, this is not something an industry that is making $100’s of billions of dollars producing and selling these products wants us to know. The bottled water industry is making over $100 billion worldwide and over $16 billion in the United States each year selling us filtered tap water in plastic bottles that is only meant to be used once then thrown away. The only sustainable thing they are providing is profit…for them.

Okay, there is my sales pitch. Now, let me tell you why I chose to get so involved.


About 5 years ago I read Blue Gold by Maude Barlow and Tony Clark. In short, this book informs us of the bottled water industry and the banking industry’s aggressive efforts to privatize our public water supplies; the water we, the US tax payers, currently own. This book opened my eyes to some ugly truths that are going on right now under our very noses. As a matter of fact, we, the public, are financing these ugly truths every time we purchase bottled water.


Most bottled water companies are not American owned companies. Do we want our fresh water supplies owned by foreign countries? Bottled water is already ounce-for-ounce more expensive than gasoline. Currently, from our own homes, we can fill an 8oz. glass of water 15,000 times with filtered tap water and it will still cost less than buying a 12-pack of bottled water.


Chances are if you drink filtered tap water from your home, you are drinking the same water that you are purchasing in bottles. Whether we like it or not, close to 50% of ALL bottled water is just regular tap water that has been filtered from a US municipal water source… our public water supplies. We are being led to believe that bottled water is safer and fresher than tap water, but the truth is that it is not.


Although they try to persuade us to believe bottled water is safer, I challenge you to find a bottled water company that will print or even say that their water is safer. The fact is they won’t and they can’t, because it’s simply not true. In 2007, the bottled water industry reported revenues in excess of $16 billion in the United States and over $100 billion worldwide. These multinational corporations want to own our water and sell it back to us for thousands of percents more than we currently pay. Let me ask you, when was the last time a politician or a big corporation represented our best interest?


Many people are simply not aware that we are running out of fresh water. Although 70% of the planet is covered in water, only 2.6% is fresh drinking water. The United Nations released a report last year stating that by the year 2025 over two-thirds of our planet will not have enough fresh water to sustain basic life. That’s 17 years from now. Fresh water is the most valuable natural resource we have, even more valuable than oil. We need fresh water to live. That is why it is so important to the corporations and banks to own it…hence, Blue Gold. Do we want these multinational companies to have that kind of control over our survival?
